The Run for the Roses

Held each year at the iconic Churchill Downs® race track in Louisville, Kentucky on the first Saturday in May, The Kentucky Derby®, also referred to as “The Run for the Roses”, is the longest continuously running event in the United States.

As the first leg of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown [followed by the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes], “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” derives its name from the approximate duration of the race to the 1 1/4 mile finish line!

As our team prepares for several upcoming Derby events and private parties, be amazed + inspired by fashionable tablescapes with exquisite taffeta red roses draped and garlanded over Bohemian Cardinal linens by Over The Top, lush red rose statement topiary florals by The Flower Studio, elegant event stationary by EIGHT21 Studios designs by Carol Woldhuis + LBrown & Paperie, handmade custom Derby guest favor boxes by mirabelle studio filled with aged Kentucky bourbon, artisan chocolates and handmade silk bowties from Mark Roscoe, custom silks by KY Jockey Silks and spectacular photographs by Gabi Bucataru of PhotoGabi! In 1973, a race record of one minute 59.40 seconds was set by Secretariat, the first U.S. Triple Crown winner in 25 years since Citation’s 1948 win. Following a 37-year losing streak since Affirmed’s 1978 win, American Pharaoh won the Triple Crown in 2015. Who is your favorite for The 2016 Kentucky Derby®?

So, as the horses make their way from the paddock to the starting gate on Saturday, May 7, 2016 for “The Run for the Roses”, we hope you’ll stand with us proudly, mint julep in hand and a bit teary eyed, as we proudly sing “My Old Kentucky Home”.

Who will win The Kentucky Derby® in 2016? Place your bets now + enjoy “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports”!

“My Old Kentucky Home”

by Stephen Foster

The sun shines bright in the old Kentucky home,

’Tis summer, the people are gay;

The corn-top’s ripe and the meadow’s in the bloom,

While the birds make music all the day;

The young folks roll on the little cabin floor,

All merry, all happy and bright;

By’n by hard times comes a-knocking at the door,

Then my old Kentucky home, Good-night!

Weep no more my lady,

Oh, weep no more today!

We will sing one song for my old Kentucky home

For the old Kentucky home, far away.
